Christian Campaign for Effective Charity

What it is:

Our charity campaign supports top-rated global health and development charities as a joint effort of our community. It was originally launched in December 2020 as a joint venture between EA for Christians and One for the World. It has expanded in August 2023 to include Charityvest as a platform partner as well.

Purpose:

To raise money in the name of Jesus to care for the poor and the sick around the world as effectively as we can.

How it works:

One for the World’s payment infrastructure, Donational, sends 100% of your funds to the Givewell charities you select, minus an industry-standard 1% - 4% processing fee, depending on your method of payment. This platform supports tax-deductibility in the US and the UK. Alternatively, you can use Charityvest to donate to our related Community Fund campaign, see here.

Why this Campaign?

As Christians, we are called to love our neighbours and to be good stewards of our God-given resources. At its core, EA for Christians is a community of Christians thinking carefully about doing good and then applying these insights to their daily lives. Many of us recognise the importance of giving to highly effective, carefully vetted charities, and the huge improvements they can make to the lives of the global poor.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus encourages us to “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”, but also says “when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets … to be honoured by others”. While of course you may support effective charities directly, a gift via the Christian Campaign for Effective Charity (with no additional costs) helps us give as a community honouring God, rather than as individuals, and strikes us as a good way to respect both of these precepts. Our hope is that a robust response to this campaign will demonstrate to the world both God’s heart for the poor, and also the compatibility of Christian faith with a thought process driven by reason and evidence.

Since this campaign launched in December 2020, over $475,000 has been raised. These donations have given children mosquito nets in Uganda, nutritional support in Cameroon, and deworming tablets in India. These interventions save lives and lift families out of poverty.

We are excited for you to join us as we use our hearts, our minds, and our financial resources to lift up the most vulnerable people on Earth. We welcome one-time donations in any amount, and we strongly encourage regular, automated giving, for reasons discussed here. To learn more about the charities you can choose, and how each relates to a biblical call, see here. For guidance from us on how to choose among them, including any specific faith-based concerns, see here. If you have questions about the campaign, check out our FAQ. You are also welcome contact us with suggestions or concerns.

Making a donation is easy, using the Donational secure payment system. If you encounter any issues with Donational, please email rasool@1fortheworld.org for assistance.

The campaign uses One for the World’s payments infrastructure so charities receive as much money as giving directly. Giving via the campaign also helps EA for Christians understand the growth of our movement and the impact of its own ministry.

We also work with One for the World on strategy, outreach and evaluation of the campaign.

We use GiveWell, the leading evaluator of global poverty charities, to identify top charities whose programs have a very high impact per dollar, backed by solid evidence. GiveWell’s top charities list changes over time, based on evidence of programs’ effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, room for additional funding and transparency.
