“I do not believe we can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare.”
- C.S. Lewis
Take The 1% Pledge
Generosity requires intentionality. Be intentional about your giving by pledging to give at least 1% of your income to the most effective charities. We can almost certainly spare more than 1%, and even this is enough to change the lives of people in extreme poverty.
More and more Christians are pledging to give more, and to give effectively.
FAQs
How do I make a giving pledge?
Right now, you can make the personal resolution to give at least 1% of your income to highly effective charities. You can formalize this pledge by setting an ongoing gift to our charity fund and by informing us in the giving section of our annual survey.
Is there a community behind this? What is that like?
Yes! The Christian EA community has over 500 people across the world who have made pledges to give to effective charities, attended events, and been involved with online discussions.
You are welcome to join our weekly online events!
What if I want to pledge more than 1%?
While we do not want giving to become a burden, many in our community indeed feel called to give much more than 1%. We provide advice and community support to help you fulfill your call to radical, effective generosity.
What is your charity campaign? What are effective charities?
The Christian Campaign for Effective Charity (CCEC) raises money in the name of Jesus to care for the poor and the sick around the world. We’re campaigning for proven highly-effective charities, such as those recommended by GiveWell, the gold-standard charity evaluator.
Our campaign’s charities are “effective” in that they have demonstrated they actually work, they deliver their services extremely cheaply and efficiently, they could do more work with more funding, and they are exceptionally transparent.
For more on our selection process, see here.
Does all my money go to the charity I select?
Yes, 100% of your donations go to the charities you select, minus an industry-standard 1% - 4% processing fee, depending on your method of payment.
One for the World will send you an itemized receipt for each donation you make, and you might even be able to deduct your donation from your taxes.
Should I still give to my local church?
We think that being involved in a church community is an important part of a flourishing Christian life, though, at the same time, we are aware that many of the best opportunities to make a difference in the world are found outside of our local communities.
We would encourage you to honor any commitments you have already made to your local church, while also giving at least 1% to help the world’s poorest people in Christ’s name.
